Features

Embedding vs Linking to External Content

When you are adding functionality or information to your website you might be getting the content from an existing external site.  The primary examples of this are shopping sites and corporate or franchise sites.  The two main ways to bring this information to your site are to simply link to the external site or to actually embed it in your site. Embedding is a more complicated process but might be the right solution for you.  Lets look at the two options. 

Linking 

Linking to another website is by far the easier option.  You can add text that is hyperlinked, add a clickable button or even ad a clickable image.  However you link to it, you have to decide if it’s going to open up in an external window or open up on the existing window.  We encourage the former option so that your own website is still open on their computer, encouraging them to come back to it.

You’re going to want to make sure the external site is somewhat branded to look like your main site so that that users feel that they’re in the right place.  Sometimes you can control this and sometimes the 3rd party site gives you no control. This is one of the main cons. 

One of the reasons to simply link to another site is that it’s much easier to do. Also, when users are clicking through the different pages of the external site, the hyperlinks (shows in the address bar) update to reflect what page they’re on.  This is important for users who like to bookmark exact pages. 

 

Embedding

This option is kind of like putting a TV on your wall that only has one channel.  You control the wall color (branding ) all around the TV, because it’s still your site.  But this TV (called iframe) is a display to the external site’s content.  Users are still technically on your site, but part of the page is showing them the external site.  As they click around the external site, they are actually staying on that particular page of your site.  This is kind of like changing the channel on your TV, but you’re still in your living room staring at the same wall. 

The main benefits are that the user is still on your site and can click to other pages on your site.  This means that your branding is consistent. 

A few of the negatives are that the user cannot bookmark particular links on the external site, because their browser still thinks that they’re on the same page of your site. And there are some issues displaying this properly on every browser, computer and smartphone.
